Box Score 2 KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team fell to Angelo State, 7-6 and West Texas A&M, 4-3, on the first day of the Lone Star Conference Post Season Baseball Tournament on Thursday.
In the game against Angelo State, Kingsville (34-18) scored the first run of the game when
Taylor Taska singled up the middle to drive in
Derrick Walls. Walls walked to reach first base, stole base, and moved to third base on a wild pitch.
The game remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when Kingsville blew the game open with four runs. The first run was scored when
Brian Frazier doubled into the left field and brought in Walls. Walls walked to reach first base, advanced to second base on a
Matt Perez bunt and made it to third as Taska ground out.
James Black sent a bomb into left field for a 3-run homer.
Miles Holcomb and
Travis Laird were brought across the plate. The home run was Black's fourth of the season and ties him with Frazier for the season.
Angelo (27-24) made a bold statement in the top of the seventh inning when Brett David hit a pinch-hit grand slam home run to left field. Derek Tyner, Christian Summers, and David Goggin were driven in to bring the score to 5-4.
The Rams took control of the game with a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning and a home run in the top of the ninth. Cameron Massengill doubled to left center to bring in Goggin and Tyler Coughenour, 6-5. Nehwon Norkeh scored the seventh run of the game for Angelo when he hit a home run over the left field wall, 7-5.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Kingsville's Walls doubled to bring in
Julian Duran, 7-6. Duran was hit by pitch to reach first base and advanced to third on a
Cline Andrews single to center field.
Cody Williams (5-6) suffered the loss for the Javelinas. He pitched two innings with three runs with three earned on five hits.
Graylon Brown (6-3) picked up the win for Angelo with one inning pitched. He had no runs with none earned on no hits. Jason Zgardowski earned his third save of the season with 1.1 innings pitched for one run with one earned.
With the loss of their game to Angelo, Kingsville faced West Texas A&M (34-18) in game three of the double elimination tournament.
The Buffs scored the first three runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. The first of those three runs came as Jared Hargrove drove in David Hebert with a single to center field. Hebert singled up the middle to get on first base, advanced to second base on a Dylan Dyson single through the right side, and advanced to third after Jacob Caples hit a sacrifice bunt. The second and third runs was scored were when Dyson crossed home plate on a wild pitch and Hargrove came in after Nick Chapman singled through the left side.
Kingsville scored a total of three runs in the top of the third and fifth inning. Perez singled and drove in
Clint Wallace in the third inning, 3-1. Wallace walked to reach first base, advanced to second base on a passed ball and advanced to third base after Walls singled to the pitcher. In the fifth inning,
Dustin Aguilar came across home plate after Perez singled to left center, 3-2. Aguilar singled to reach first base and advance to third when Walls singled up the middle. Taska hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Walls, 3-3. Walls reached first base with a single and advanced to third base when Perez singled.
West Texas A&M would score the last run of the game and hold on to defeat the Javelinas. The Buffs posted the last run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Tyler McKnight singled up the middle to drive in Matt Redfearn. Redfearn singled to reach first base and stole second base.
Denver Diefenbach (9-4) suffered the loss for the Javelinas with 6.1 innings pitched. He pitched for four runs with four earned on 11 hits. He scattered four batters and walked three.
Buff's Scott Cone (7-2) picked the win with seven innings pitched with three runs with two earned on nine hits. Paul Lujan received his seventh save of the season with one inning of work with no runs with none earned on no hits.
The Javelinas tournament play comes to a close and the team gears up for a possible appearance in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in Grand Junction, Colorado from May 15th – 19th.
