Javelinas Sweep Remaining LSC Teams To Advance To Championship Game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Texas A&M-Kingsville (37-19) sweep the remaining Lone Star Conference teams, Tarleton and West Texas A&M to advance to the NCAA Division II South Central Region Baseball Championship game on Sunday at noon (MT) / 1 p.m. (CT).

In Game 8, Kingsville defeated Tarleton with a score of 8-6.

The Javelinas score four quick runs in the top of the first inning and one in the top of the second inning. The first run came in as Taylor Taska singled through the left side and drove in Derrick Walls, 1-0. Walls walked to reach first base and advanced to second when Matt Perez singled through the left side. Brian Frazier doubled to left center field and drove in Perez and Taska for the next two runs, 3-0. Perez singled to reach first base and moved to second when Taska singled through the left side. Frazier scored the fourth run when James Black hit a fly ball into center field, 4-0. Frazier doubled to reach second and advanced to third when Ryan Guedry singled through the left side. The lone run of the second inning was scored when Taska singled through the left side and drove in Walls. Walls singled to reach first and stole second.

Tarleton (30-24) answered back by scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Rustin Thomas homered to left field and drove in Jared Musgrove and Alvaro Moreno, 5-4. Moreno singled to reach first base and advanced to third base on a throwing error. Musgrove reached first on a throwing error and advanced to second base on the same error. Dalton Weeks grounded out and drove in Garrett Kilgore, 5-5. Kilgore reached third base when he tripled to right field.
Taylor Taska drove in Matt Perez when he homered to left field for two runs in the top of the fourth inning, 7-5. Perez reached second base when he doubled down the right field line.

The Texans scored one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The run came in as Musgrove scored on an error, 7-6.  He singled to reach first base and advanced to second when Thomas was walked.

Clint Wallace homered to left field to score the last run of the game in the top of the eighth inning, 8-6.

Cody Williams (6-6) picked up the win for Kingsville with 5.1 innings pitched with one run with none earned on three hits. Ryan Scott grabbed his 12th save of the season.

Colton Burleson (4-6) suffered the loss for Tarleton with 1.1 innings pitched with two runs with two earned on two hits.

After snapping up the win against Tarleton in Game 8, the Javelinas faced off against West Texas A&M (37-21) in Game 9 and walked away with a 7-5 victory. The Hoggies suffered a 17-3 defeat at the hands of the Buffs on Friday night to move into the loser's bracket. This meeting was the 10th between the Lone Star Conference teams.

The Buffs scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Tyler McKnight singled to left field and drove in Nick Chapman and Matt Redfearn, 2-0. Redfearn doubled to reach second base and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Chapman singled to reach first base and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Aaron Blair scored when Jacob Caples singled through the left side, 3-0. Blair walked to reach first base and advanced to third when McKnight singled. McKnight came across home plate after Justin Hargrove singled up the middle, 4-0. McKnight singled to reach first base, advanced to second after Caples singled and moved to third when Dylan Dyson flew out to right field.

Frazier singled up the middle and drove in Taska in the bottom of the first inning, 4-1. Taska doubled down the left field line to reach second base. The Javelinas scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead from West Texas. The first two runs came in when Perez doubled down the right field line and drove in Dustin Aguilar and Walls, 4-3. Aguilar was hit by a pitch to reach first base, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and stole third base. Walls walked to reach first base and stole second base. Walls has stolen 28 bases for the season. Perez was driven in by Frazier when he singled to left field, 4-4. Perez doubled to reach second base and advanced to third base after Taska doubled. Guedry drove in the fourth run of the bottom of the third inning when he grounded out and brought Taska across the plate, 5-4. Taska reached second base with a double and advanced to third base when Frazier singled.

Kingsville scored the last two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Perez hit a sacrifice fly into right field and drove in Wallace, 6-5. Wallace was hit by a pitch to reach first base, advanced to second base when Aguilar singled, and moved to third when Walls hit a bunt single. Aguilar was driven in when Taska hit a sacrifice fly into center field, 7-5. Aguilar singled to reach first base and advanced to second when Walls hit a bunt single.

The Javelina pitching staff and defense kept the Buffs from scoring in the last innings of the game. Hayden James and Ryan Scott each pitched an inning (seventh and eighth inning) with no runs and none earned on no hits. Guedry led the team with eight putouts while Kingsville combined for 27 in Game 9.

Taska (3-1) earned the win for the Hoggies by putting in seven innings of work with four runs with four earned on six hits. Scott picked up his 13th save for the season.

Nick Duncan (1-1) suffered the loss for West Texas with 2 innings pitched with five runs with five earned on five hits.

Kingsville advances to the regional championship game against tournament host, Colorado Mesa University on Sunday at noon (MT) / 1 p.m. (CT).
