Javelina Baseball Hosts Angelo State

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team welcomes Angelo State to town this weekend as the Javelinas close out the home portion of their regular-season schedule at Nolan Ryan Field this Friday and Saturday.

The teams will meet in a single game this Friday night at 6 p.m. with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. Fifteen Hoggie seniors will be honored on Saturday between games as they their final regular-season home game. Saturday will also be Pack the House, Spirit Day and Greek Day in conjunction with the office of Student Activities.

Kingsville enters the weekend with a 30-14 overall record and is in first place in the Lone Star Conference with a 20-9 mark. The Hoggies hold a 1-game lead over West Texas A&M with the conference champion hosting the LSC Championship. Angelo State is 25-19 and third in the conference at 14-15. Both teams are currently ranked in the region top eight.

The Javelinas enter the weekend with a .291 team average led by Derrick Walls with a .368 mark. The senior is the third-leading hitter in the Lone Star Conference.

Five other Javelinas are hitting over .300 with at least 89 at bats. Brian Frazier is second at .360 followed by Ryan Guedry (.346), Taylor Taska (.333), Justin Lee (.305) and Dustin Aguilar (.305). Taska leads the team with 31 runs batted in and six home runs, while Wells leads the league with 21 steals and has 36 runs scored.

The Hoggie pitching staff boasts a trio of players at the top major statistical categories. Cody Williams is first with a 1.88 ERA, while Denver Diefenbach is first with eight wins. Ryan Scott is tops with nine saves.  Dallas Ponder is fourth with six wins, while Matt Rhodes and Williams are tied for sixth with five wins.

Angelo is batting .287 as a team and has a league-best 85 stolen bases. The Rams are third with a 3.62 ERA. Brett David leads the team with a .328 mark. Tyler Coughenour is tops with four home runs, and Nehwon Norkeh has a team-best 19 stolen bases. Jake Feckley and Graylon Brown lead ASU with five wins apiece, while Brown has a team-best four saves. Blake Bass leads the team with a 2.29 ERA.
