Javelinas, Buffs Split Doubleheader On Final Day Of Series

Box Score CANYON, Texas – Looking to even its Lone Star Conference series against West Texas A&M at 2-2 on Saturday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team suffered a heart-breaking loss in the series finale dropping a 2-1 decision in extra innings. The Javelinas won the first game of the day 1-0 at Wilder Park.

In the bottom of the tenth, the Buffs (13-3) received a lead-off double by Nick Chapman off Cody Williams. Chapman would be safe on third on a Clint Wallace error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Aaron Blair. After Williams intentionally walked Dylan Dyson to set up the force at any base, Ryan Scott relieved him and hit Justin Hargrove with the first pitch he threw to bring in the winning run.

Williams would be credited with his second loss of the series as Kingsville fell to 6-7 on the year. Williams, who struggled in his performance on Friday allowing three runs without recording an out, was solid on Saturday allowing one hit in three innings of work until the lead-off double in the tenth while striking out three.

Kingsville struck first in the finale. James Black led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Johnson. Clint Wallace singled up the middle off Ashton Sivigliano for a 1-0 lead.

West Texas tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one away, David Hebert singled. He moved to third after a
Dallas Ponder balk and wild pitch. Hebert raced home on a ground out to knot the game at one.

Ponder tossed six innings for Kingsville scattering five hits. He walked two batters and struck out four. His counterpart Sivigliano also went six innings allowing an unearned run on four hits, while striking out 10.

The Javelinas had several opportunities to regain the lead.

In the seventh, Johnson singled to start the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Johnson advanced to third with a wild pitch and one out but was left stranded.

Kingsville had the first two batters reach in the eighth as Derrick Walls singled and Matt Perez walked. Both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Taska. Justin Lee loaded the bases as he drew a pinch-hit walk. Justin Disbro would work his way out of the jam or WT as Black flew out to center and Johnson grounded out.

The Hoggies had two runners on with one out in the top of the tenth as Walls drew a lead-off walk and Taska was intentionally walked. Both would be left on base by Paul Lujan (1-1), who was credited with the victory, popped Justin Lee up and Black hit into a fielder's choice.

Kingsville stranded 10 runners in the game.

In the first game of the day, the Javelinas snapped West Texas' 11-game winning streak as Denver Diefenbach tossed a 7-inning, complete game. He scattered four hits and fanned three while walking two in improving to 2-1. Only three runners reached second for the Buffs

Kingsville scored the game's lone run in the second inning. Ryan Guedry led the inning off with a double off Joshua Weyker and went to third on a grounder. After Clint Wallace walked, James Black drove in Guedry.

Weyker went seven innings giving up the one run on seven hits. He walked three Javelinas and had five strikeouts.
Black and Taska each had two hits.

The Javelinas return home next weekend to host Cameron in a 4-game LSC series. The teams will play a single game at 6 p.m. Friday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The set concludes with a game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
