Javelinas Open Road Swing with 8-1 Win over Palominos

TAMUK bests Laredo CC in first of three weekend road matches

LAREDO, Texas – The No. 47 Texas A&M University-Kingsville women's tennis program started off the three-game road trip with a strong performance against Laredo Community College on Friday at the H.E.B. Tennis Courts.

The Javelinas (9-10) turned in an 8-1 decision over the Palominos (0-6) thanks to strong doubles play and solid singles matchups.

The No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea) and senior Viviana Ortiz (Guayaquil, Ecuador) set the tone for the remainder of the match as they cruised to an 8-0 final over Priscilla Morales and Monika Cantu.

Sophomore Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Phonephathep Philavong (Vientiane, Laos) followed suit with an 8-2 final at the No. 1 doubles over Chantal Lozano and Kely Oliveira, while freshman Mariana Correa (Vitoria, Brazil) and senior Martina Urrutia (Madrid, Spain) closed out doubles play with an 8-6 win over Jen Hundsnurscher and Tania Ramirez at the no. 3 spot.

Ruiz and Urrutia carried their momentum into singles play as the two took straight-set, 6-0 wins over Hundsnurscher and Ramirez between the No. 4 and No. 6 singles bouts, respectively.

Philavong was one point away from matching the feat as she took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Cantu at the No. 2 singles spot, while freshman Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Oliveira at the No. 3 bout.

Romanovaskaia provided the final team point with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Lozano at the No. 1 spot to close out the day.

The Javelinas will make the trek north on Saturday, April 7, to Odessa, Texas, to take on UT-Permian Basin in a Lone Star match. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
