Javelinas Host Aggies for Senior Day

Blue and Gold will honor Viviana Ortiz and Martina Urrutia on Friday, March 30

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M University-Kingsville women's tennis program will wrap up the home portion of the schedule on Friday, March 30, with its Senior Day match against Cameron University.

The Javelinas are looking to build on their 8-9, 1-1 LSC, record after a 2-2 mark from last week that included wins over Newman (6-1) and North Central Texas (9-0), following losses to New Mexico State (5-4) and Tarleton State (5-4).

The Blue and Gold split the singles matchups against NMSU, with Laura Montalvo, Valerie Ruiz and Stephanie Baerman each claiming a win, but the visitors ended up with the majority of doubles points as Victoria Romanovskaia and Viviana Ortiz were the long TAMUK duo to take a decision.

It was a near-identical results against Tarleton State as the Texanns took a pair of doubles wins while Romanovskaia and Ortiz claimed a decision at the No. 3 doubles matchup. Julia Rauer, along with Ruiz and Baerman, each took a singles point in straight sets over their TSU opponent.

The Javelinas flipped the script on the Sunday matches, first by taking an early 6-1 win over Newman following doubles wins from Romanovskaia and Ortiz, along with Baerman and Montalvo, while Montalvo, Rauer, Baerman and Phonephathep Philavong each took a singles point.

TAMUK closed the weekend with a perfect 9-0 shutout of NCTC, getting a dominating performance in every doubles and singles matchup.

Cameron climbed to No. 17 in the Oracle/ITA Tennis rankings while riding a six-match win streak after defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Baptist, St. Edward's, Emporia State, Northwest Missouri State and then-No. 12 Drury, and will open up its portion of the LSC schedule against Angelo State on March 29.

The Aggies are led by a combined 48-27 record amongst the starting singles matchups, including a 10-1 mark from Rebeka Velasova at the No. 6 spot and a 9-4 record from Mathilde Thibaudat at the No. 2/3 spot.

Melany Opolz was recently named LSC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week as she went 5-0 between her singles and doubles play, sweeping her matchup against Emporia State and Drury and taking a three-set win against her matchup against Northwest Missouri.

Opolz took a 2-0 record in doubles play at the No. 3 spot against NW and Drury.

The Javelinas will honor the senior duo of Ortiz and Martina Urrutia following the match. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT on Friday, March 30.
