Baseball Slugs 22 Runs in Game Two Dominance, Takes Game One in Extras

Artis finished game two 4-for-6 with five RBI

PORTALES, N.M. (Baseball) –
#RV/30 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (26-16, 20-9 LSC) put on an offensive showcase in game two, scoring 22 runs on 18 hits in the dominating 22-5 run-rule victory that followed a 5-4 extra-inning game one win versus Eastern New Mexico University (14-26, 9-17 LSC) on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Stadium.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Javelinas are 2.0 games ahead of second place West Texas A&M University in the Lone Star Conference standings and the Hogs have now won 20-plus LSC contests for the second consecutive season.

Game One
Ryan Scott and James Gray matched one another with back-to-back scoreless innings to begin the game and the Javelinas were able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after Ryan Fickel's triple. The senior crossed the plate on a wild pitch, using his speed to score the game's first run.

With one on, Lone Star Conference Preseason Player of the Year Matthew Burks found a gap and reached on a triple to tie the game at 1-1 and a balk allowed the Greyhounds to take a one-run edge. With the runs, Scott's scoreless streak was snapped at 26.2 innings, the longest by any Javelina pitcher this season.

The Javelinas threatened in the fifth after a two-out error allowed Wesley Aguilar to reach and Fickel singled to put the tying run in scoring position. Zach Smith drew a full count walk to load the bases for Clint Wallace and a crucial throwing error by Gray allowed TAMUK to take a 3-2 lead. Hayden Vesely singled to left field to plate the third run of the inning – all unearned – as the Javelinas went into the bottom of the fifth with a two-run cushion.

ENMU tacked on a run in the bottom frame to cut its deficit to one. A squeeze play with the tying run 90 feet away worked for the Greyhounds, knotting game one at 4-all in the seventh.

Cline Andrews, who reached on an infield single, stole second base and came around to score in the top of the eighth on Christian Caudle's RBI single, giving the Javelinas a 5-4 lead as the freshman's hit was the game-winning base knock . Caudle continues to shine as the catcher/designated hitter receives more playing time.

Weston Silverberg (3-0) improved to 3-0 in his first season in a Javelina uniform, striking out five in 3.0 innings. Scott tossed 5.0 innings in the no-decision and Gray went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and four runs – one earned. Southpaw Russell Edwards fell to 1-2 in 2015 after giving up a run in extra innings.

With runners on first and second and the red hot Burks at the plate, Silverberg buckled down and punched out the center fielder and followed with a strikeout of Charles Sandberg Jr. to strand the tying run in scoring position.

Fickel and Andrews went a combined 4-for-6 and scored three runs in the game one victory. With the win, the Javelinas improved to 3-2 in extra-inning contests.

Game Two
The patient Javelinas scored 22 runs on 18 hits and 14 walks, just one shy of the team's single game record.

Leadoff walks to Fickel and Smith and a fielder's choice by Wallace proved to be costly as Caudle drove in the game's first run and Larren Artis followed with a two-run single to give the Javelinas a 3-0 lead.

Back-to-back walks to begin the third led to a three-run bomb off the bat of Artis to blow the game open and give the Hogs a 6-0 lead. The three RBI gave the big first baseman four in the first three innings of the game and the long ball was his team-high third of the season. The wild pitching continued and Smith drew a one out, bases loaded walk to make it a 7-0 game.

Wallace also reached safely on a walk to plate another run and Andrews singled to center field to give the Javelinas a six-run inning and 9-0 lead.

In the bottom frame, ENMU responded with five runs, three coming off the bat of Chris Sanders.

Continuing to score at will, the Javelinas registered another huge inning, scoring 10 runs on eight hits, highlighted by a three-run home run by Wallace, to take a 16-5 lead. The inning was the second consecutive that featured the order bat around. Artis went 2-for-2 in the inning and finished the top of the fourth already 4-for-4 with five RBI.

Texas A&M-Kingsville added its 20th run of the game in the top of the fifth, marking the first time the Hogs score 20 or more runs since Feb. 12, 2008 when Texas A&M International battled TAMUK at Nolan Ryan Field.

Blake Johnson pinch hit in the sixth and drove in Miles Holcomb and two batters later, Andrews registered his third base hit and drove in his third run of the game, making it a 22-5 game.

The 22 runs were the most in a game since the Javelinas blanked the Greyhounds, 22-0, in Portales, N.M. on April 23, 2004.

Matt Terrones (7-1) earned his seventh win of the season after striking out five in 6.0 innings. Trey Taylor came in and tossed a scoreless seventh. Clyde Kendrick (2-1) was charged with the loss after allowing nine runs on eight walks in 2.1 innings. The top of the order for ENMU went 9-of-12 with four RBI in game two.

Artis finished 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored, Wallace drove in four and Andrews, Vesely and Aguilar registered multi-hit performances. Fickel, Smith, Artis and Brayton Carlson each scored three runs and Johnson and Brady Bippert came off the bench with pinch hit singles.

The Javelinas return to Nolan Ryan Field to host nationally-ranked St. Edward's University on Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m.
