Mariaxi Herrera defeated No. 9 (in central region) Alina Gorina, 6-4, 6-3, and
Marija Dimitrovska and
Paula Saenz came out victorious in their singles flights.
Erika Larrea was winning 6-1, 3-1 in singles No. 6.
"I am very proud of this team," said head coach
Autumn Williams. "They fought for every point. It was a good day on the courts for us. UCO was a tough team, but the girls were focused and fueled by the events of the day."
Match OneThe Javelinas trailed 3-0 heading into singles play after the Hilltoppers took all three doubles. Herrera gave No. 49 Brooke Hughes a run in flight No. 1 before St. Edward's took the singles match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. In flight No. 3, Dimitrovska nearly upset Rafaela Haegele, 6-4, 6-5. However, St. Edward's was able to capitalize and defeat the Javelinas, 7-0.
St. Edward's entered ranked No. 4 in the South Central Region in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll, released on Feb. 25. The Hilltoppers featured three regionally-ranked players.
Match TwoThe Hogs rebounded to dominate their way to a 6-2 win over Central Oklahoma. Taking doubles No. 1, 8-3, Herrera and Dimitrovska also earned singles victories in flights No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Larrea and Saenz registered an 8-2 win in doubles No. 2 and
Nadia Grlj and
Tabata Lua recorded an 8-1 victory in doubles No. 3.
The Javelinas take on Our Lady of the Lake University (0-1) tomorrow at 10 a.m. and No. 16 St. Mary's University (5-1) at 1 p.m. The Javelinas are 1-1 all-time against the Saints after defeating OLLU, 5-4, in 2013.
