Javelinas Drop Pair To Eastern New Mexico In Final At Bat

Box Score PORTALES, NM – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team suffered a pair of heart-breaking losses Friday night in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Greyhound Field against Eastern New Mexico. The Javelinas fell 3-2 and 4-3.

The Greyhounds (14-8, 4-6) scored the final run in their final turn at the plate to win both games.
In the opening game, the Javelinas (11-9, 5-5) struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first. Derrick Walls led off the game with a single through the right side and advanced all the way to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Matt Perez followed with an RBI single and scored later in the inning a 1-out double by Justin Lee.

Kingsville would get just one runner past second base the final six innings.

After scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the second, the Greyhounds tied the game in bottom of the second. Rawley Gomez led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Matthew Burks.

The game remained knotted at two in the bottom of the seventh. With two away, Sam Hedrick was hit by a pitch from Taylor Taska. He raced around the bases to score as Blake Cooper doubled and Kingsville's Blake Johnson committed an error in right field.

Taska (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season. He scattered eight hits and allowed just one earned run. Ben Monticello moved to 4-1 as he allowed the two runs on six hits while striking out eight.

In the second game, it was Eastern that took the 2-0 lead. The Greyhounds tallied once in the first and again in the third.

Kingsville jumped on the board in the fifth. With two gone, Walls walked. He would score on as Matt Perez's single was misplayed in the outfield to pull the Javelinas to within a run.

The Hoggies tied the game at two in the seventh. Dustin Aguilar singled to start the inning, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a single by Perez. He crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Taska.

ENMU regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Hedrick led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Cooper double.

The Javelinas knotted the game at three in the eighth. With one away, James Black was hit by a pitch and went to second as Clint Wallace walked. Johnson drove a single back up the middle to tie the game at three. Kingsville would leave the bases loaded.

After leaving the bases full in the bottom of the eighth, Eastern scored in the bottom of the ninth. With one away, Steven Moore walked and stole second. With two away after Cody Williams fanned his second batter of the inning, Gomez hit a single up the middle to win the game.

Dallas Ponder went six innings in the start striking out five and walking five. He allowed a pair of earned runs on four hits. Dustin Luna allowed a run on two hits with no outs, while Hayden James tossed two scoreless innings. Williams was credited with the loss as he allowed a run on one hit and walk in 2/3 innings.

Keigan Basso tossed a perfect ninth to move to 3-1 on the season

The Javelinas finished with nine hits as Aguilar and Perez each had two. Ryan Forkel and Cooper each had two hits for the hosts who had seven in the game.

The two sides close out their series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
