Milledgeville, Ga. — The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team dropped all three doubles matches but rebounded in dominant fashion on the singles courts, sweeping all six singles matchups to claim a 6-1 victory over Georgia College and State University.
The Javelinas struggled early, falling in all three doubles contests. The tandem of Guadalupe Tocci and Maya Donkor dropped their match to Rachel Black and Victoria Conde Vendrell, 3-6, while Andrea Landaeta and Emma Halvarsson fell in a tiebreak to Natalie Kirka and Laura Almagro, 6-7 (5-7). Kaitlin Blount and Annika Andersson Gomez also fell, 3-6, to Alisa Chiang and Lucy Kim.
Facing a 0-3 deficit heading into singles play and dropping the doubles point, TAMUK didn't flinch.
Landaeta set the tone with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 straight-set win over Conde Vendrell, and Donkor followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Kirka. Andersson Gomez dispatched Almagro 6-3, 6-2, and Halvarsson handled Kim by the same score.
Perhaps the most impressive effort of the afternoon came from Tocci, who recovered from dropping the first set 3-6 against Black before storming back to win 6-1, 6-1 and seal the team point. Blount mirrored that storyline, also dropping the opening set before grinding out a 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback win over Chiang to complete the sweep.
Up next, the Javelinas return to Texas to face Hawaii Pacific University on Wednesday, March 4th at 2:00 p.m. in San Antonio.
