Kingsville - Following a promising start to the season last week, the Texas A&M-Kingsville Women's Tennis team travels to Corpus Christi to compete at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open.
The tournament runs Friday through Sunday and features a competitive field including the University of Houston, UTSA, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Lubbock Christian, and host Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
The Islander Open has been around since 1998 and is the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) tournament of the year. The tournament honors former Islander Jake Frederick, a Marine who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of his country.Â
At last weekend's Brother Al Invitational hosted by St.Mary's, seniors Guadalupe Tocci and Annika Andersson Gomez both advanced to their respective finals before weather forced tournament suspension. The veteran teammates will look to carry this impressive form into the Islander Open against challenging competition.
Sophomore Andrea Landeta demonstrated remarkable resilience despite narrowly missing her draw's finals, mounting a comeback effort that fell just short. She'll aim to build on that competitive spirit this weekend.
Transfer student Yasmin El Fadili continues to settle into her role representing the Javelinas after a semifinal appearance in San Antonio, seeking to take the next step forward in Corpus Christi.
Not only are the Javelinas bringing the competition in their respective singles matches but also alongside one another in doubles play.
Maya Donkor and Lily-Isabelle Muraske will look to build on their semifinal run at St.Mary's, where they were narrowly eliminated.
Transfer student Hannah Nagpall will partner with Andrea Landaeta as the duo look to continue and develop their chemistry on the court.
