Day One Recap: Nieto finishes as National Runner-Up, Christopher makes All-American

Pueblo, CO - On day one at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships, senior Thomas Nieto ended his Javelina career by breaking a nearly three-decade old record to finish as the National Runner Up in the men's pole vault, while senior Cynai Christopher added another All-American honor to her resume in the women's 400m prelims.

In an intense battle for the National Title in the pole vault, Nieto cleared 5.52m, which was not only a new personal record, but also broke the elusive school record that had stood since 1998. It also allowed Nieto, a native of Ibagué, Colombia, to reclaim the Colombian all-time record. Though Nieto cleared the same height as the eventual Champion, he lost the tiebreaker on attempts and was named runner-up. Nieto ends his time in the blue and gold as a six-time All-American in the pole vault.

Later in the day, at the 400m prelims, Christopher ran a new outdoor PR of 53.73, just 0.02 seconds off of the school record. Christopher, who grabbed the school record and became an All-American in the event during the indoor season, ended her individual career with the Hogs by making it on to the All-American Second Team, placing 11th after a runner ahead of her was disqualified.

Freshman Oneika Brissett also ran in the 400m prelims, placing 15th with a time of 54.32. Both Brissett and Christopher will take part in the 4x400m relay, running alongside senior Vitiana Robert and freshman Sakara Wade. That crew will look to follow up an First-Team-All-American performance during the indoor season as they attempt to make the event's finals - the prelims are set to begin at 7:50 p.m. tonight.

Day two will be a busy one for the Javelinas:
