Kingsville - After beginning their outdoor seasons at home two weeks ago, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's track and field teams are travelling to San Antonio to compete at the UTSA Invite.
The teams will be looking to replicate last year's performance at the same invite, in which they combined to post eight new top five marks in the nation. This year, they enter the weekend with four such marks, freshman Gage Upton's third-ranked pole vault, junior
Malachi Barendilla's third-ranked 100m, the 4x100m relay team of
Jayden McCoy,
DaTavus Pope,
Christopher Gonzalez, and Barendilla's second-ranked time, and junior
Yosiris Cordoba's top-ranked discus throw (which was also a school record).
"This should be a good meet this weekend," Head Coach
Ryan Dall said. "I think the competition will be good and I'm excited to see how we perform."
The invite will begin a two-month stretch that is set to have the Javelinas competing in at least one meet every weekend for eight straight weeks. Those eight weeks will culminate in the teams' trip to Canyon for the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships.
Competition in San Antonio will take place across two days, with six events (four field, two track) taking place on Friday, and the rest set for Saturday. Field events will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, track events at 2:00 p.m..
