Javelinas set four new or improved qualifying marks at Azusa Last Chance

Azusa, CA - Three school records, four new or emporoved qualifying marks, and two new tickets to the 2025 NCAA Outdoor National Championships highlighted the weekend of competition at the Azusa Last Chance Meet for the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's and men's track and field teams.

Both sophomore Afaf Benhadja, and sophomore Keyshawn Garcia used their 'last chance' to full effect, earned themselves a spot in the NCAA Championships. Benhadja did it by clearing a spectacular 1.73m in the high jump portion of the women's heptathlon competition. The height ties her for the 10th-highest in the nation this season. A few days later, Garcia put on a stellar performance of his own, running a 1:49.29, the new 20th-fastest time in D2 this year, crossing into the required top-22 threshold to punch his ticket to Nationals.

Though they already had the positioning to give themselves good opportunities to make Nationals entering the weekend, both sophomore Jhonatan Rodriquez-Osorno and the women's 4x400m relay posted incredible weekends. Rodriquez-Osorno, who has put together a wildly-impressive year in his first season with the Javelinas, snatched a school record in the men's 800m, running a 1:48.28, the seventh-fastest time in all of D2.

As they have done so many times before, the 4x400m crew of Vitiana Robert, Oneika Brissett, Sakara Wade, and Cynai Christopher capped off the weekend in historic fashion. The indoor All-American squad ran a 3:36.94, the second-fastest run in the event this season and the fastest time any Javelinas relay crew has ever run the event. Those four now own the school record in the event for both the indoor and the outdoor seasons.

Though they fell just short of the end goal of a Nationals-qualifying time, two other Javelinas, sophomore Nirmit Dahiya and Brissett, still had amazing weekends on the track. Dahiya ran a 3:45.64 in the men's 1500m, breaking his own record, which had stood just over two weeks, the new 32nd-fastest time in D2. Brissett's 54.08 in the women's 400m is the new 25th-fastest time in the nation in the event this year.

The Javelinas will now have a week off ahead of their trip to Pueblo, CO for Nationals on May 22nd through 24th.
