San Angelo - Sophomore
Afaf Benhadja and graduate student Roel DeLeon each posted top-10 scores in the country in their respective multi events as the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's and men's track and field teams fought through high winds and cold temperatures at the David Noble Angelo State Relays.
Benhadja, who owns the program's indoor school record in the same event, scored a 4937 in the women's heptathlon, the third-best score in school history and the ninth-best in the nation so far this season - she placed fourth in the event this weekend. DeLeon scored a 6356 in the men's decathlon, the 10th-best time in D2 in the country, and the second-best at the meet.
Weather conditions in San Angelo were less than ideal, with winds gusting at nearly 30 miles per hour and the temperature barely topping 50 on Saturday. Because of that, many of the Javelinas' top performers were held out of the meet. Accordingly, however, other TAMUK athletes had opportunities to step up and battle the elements.
Graduate student
Madison Alegria brought home the women's lone event win, continuing a fantastic start to her outdoor season with a 1.65m-clearing high jump in the women's high jump. On the men's side, it was senior
Paxton Hair who grabbed a Javelina win, posting a 52.45m throw in the discus, the longest of the meet. He also added a second-place finish in the shot put with a 15.12m throw.Â
In addition to those wins and the incredible multi performances, TAMUK posted six other top-five finishes in San Angelo this weekend, two on the men's side and four on the women's. As Kingsville's throws crew continued its stellar year, freshman
Matthew Cordero wasn't far behind Hair, posting a throw of 14.34m in the shot put and placing fifth. Junior
Blake Gordon cleared 4.60m in the men's pole vault, placing fourth in the event.Â
Senior
Vitiana Robert's placed fourth in the women's 400m with a 59.16. Junior
Odette Fernandez finished in fourth in the women's 5000m with an 18:39.09. Junior
Brooklyn Lamprecht's 10.89m long jump was the fifth-longest at the meet. Sophomore
Kaylea Demetrius' 13.09m was the fifth-best at the meet in the women's shot put.Â
The Javelinas will now look ahead to their home opener, The 2025 Cactus Cup this coming Saturday in Kingsville. It will mark Javelina fans' first and only opportunity to see their teams compete at home this season.
