Lawton, OK - Continuing a stellar stretch of play, the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's tennis team took down Cameron, 4-3, in the first of a pair of road matches this weekend.
The win is the eighth in the Javelinas' last 10 matches, and boosts them to a 3-2 Lone Star Conference record. After a 4-3 takedown of No.23 Dallas Baptist in the team's home opener last weekend, TAMUK jumped to No.43 in the ITA National D2 rankings, and will ride its hot streak into a noon matchup with No.2 Midwestern St. on Saturday.
"It was a great win today," Head Coach
Autumn Wollenzien said. "Winning the doubles point was the most important part of today's match. That set the tone for the rest of the matches. It gave us a huge boost. I'm extremely proud of the teamwork the ladies showed today to pull out this win."
The doubles point has been key lately to spark Kingsville wins and that continued today. While junior
Guadalupe Tocci and senior
Manuela Turolo lost 3-6 on the first court, the freshman duo of
Andrea Landaeta and
Annalena Noll grabbed a 6-3 win and junior
Kaitlin Blount and graduate student
Luna Jokanovic won 6-2 to secure the split point.Â
Singles saw two different matches, on the No.1 and No.2 court, go to three sets, but both went the Aggies' way. Tocci lost 5-7, 6-4, 0-1 (7-10) in the first spot while Jokanovic lost 4-6, 6-3, 0-1 (4-10) on the second court. Both went to tie-breakers as opposed to a full third set, however, as the back half of the Javelinas' lineup continued its late-season surge. TAMUK got wins at the No.4, No.5, and No.6 spot to nab the win for the road team.
At No.4, junior
Annika Andersson Gomez cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Turolo did the same at the No.5 spot, winning 6-2, 6-3. Landaeta completed the back-half sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the six spot. Noll lost 4-6, 2-6 at No.3
Kingsville now sits at nine overall wins, just one away from reaching last season's total of 10. While the team has a number of top-ranked teams left on its schedule, it has five matches left to top last year's total and improve its all-important LSC standing.
