Kingsville - For the second time this season, a top-25-ranked team came into Kingsville to face off with the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's tennis team, and for the second time this season, the Javelinas came out on top, as they secured a 4-3 upset win over Lubbock Christian on Thursday.
The team improves to 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play, with the win holding significant weight in the LSC standings as the postseason inches closer. The stretch of stellar play only continues for the Javelinas, who have now won nine of its last 12 matches.
"That was a really big, important win for us," Head Coach
Autumn Wollenzien said. "We made it tough to play here, and the girls fought really hard. They followed instructions, we wanted to make it a really tough match for them, and we did."
Much like Kingsville's home upset win, the match began with a win in the split doubles point. Senior
Luna Jokanovic and junior
Kaitlin Blount won on the No.3 doubles court, 6-2, before freshmen
Annalena Noll and
Andrea Landaeta lost 2-6, with all eyes turning to the No.1 doubles court. The duo of junior
Guadalupe Tocci and senior
Manuela Turolo battling in a back-and-forth match that went to a tiebreaker. The Javelinas came out on top, winning 7-6 (7-3).
In singles, Jokanovic won 6-4, 6-2 to make it 2-0 overall before the Chaps won the next three singles matches, taking the overall lead. Noll lost 1-6, 4-6, Landaeta lost 4-6, 3-6, and Turolo lost 4-6, 4-6.
Javelina fans then turned their attention to the two remaining courts, where Tocci fought at No.1 and junior
Annika Andersson Gomez fought at No.4. Both matches went to three sets, each going down to the wire. Andersson Gomez won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, tying up the overall score at 3-3, before Tocci won 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.Â
TAMUK will host UT - Permian Basin at 11 a.m. on Saturday for the team's senior day, where it will honor Jokanovic and Turolo.
