Corpus Christi - After inclement weather forced the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's tennis team to move what would have been its home opener to the HEB Tennis Center, the Javelinas fell 7-0 to the UT-Tyler Patriots.
The match marks the first of eight straight Lone Star Conference competitions to finish out the year and puts TAMUK at 1-2 in conference play with a 7-5 overall record. It is only the team's second loss in more than a month, as it caught fire in the final week of February, and had entered the day having won six of its last seven matches.
The day started with a split doubles point, with the Javelinas' win coming from Junior
Guadalupe Tocci and Senior
Manuela Turolo, who won 6-4 playing in the No.1 doubles spot. The freshman duo of
Andrea Landaeta and
Annalena Noll lost 6-1 on the second doubles court while graduate student
Luna Jokanovic and junior
Kaitlin Blount lost 6-0 on the third court.
Though multiple matches went to three sets, the Javelinas were swept in singles play. Tocci lost 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 2-6, in the No.1 spot, while Jokanovic lost 4-6, 2-6 in the No.2 spot. Playing as the No.3, Noll lost 2-6, 6-3, 3-6. At No.4, junior
Annika Andersson Gomez lost 3-6, 3-6, Turolo lost 0-6, 1-6 on the fifth court, and Landaeta lost 2-6, 1-6 as the sixth singles player.Â
The team will take on another ranked opponent - No.23 Dallas Baptist - in its first regular season home match of the year on Saturday at 11 a.m..
