Orlando, FL -Â The Texas A&M - Kingsville women's tennis team got back into the win column in a big way, starting its Florida trip with a 5-2 win over Lewis on Tuesday.
Playing at the U.S. Tennis Association's National Campus in Orlando, the Javelinas rebounded from a tight loss with No.13 Angelo St. by handing the shorthanded Flyer a loss.Â
Down a player, the Flyers were forced to cede the No.6 singles point, and spot the Javelinas one of the doubles matches, meaning that Kingsville needed to win just one of the doubles matches to secure the point. The team did more than that, as the freshmen duo of
Andrea Landaeta and
Annalena Noll, playing in the No.1 doubles spot, won 6-2, while junior
Kaitlin Blount and graduate student
Luna Jokanovic won on the second doubles court, 6-2.
Junior
Guadalupe Tocci continued her recent run of stellar play, taking down Lewis' No.1, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). Freshman
Anouk Terpin won the Javelinas' clinching point in the No.5 singles spot, taking down her Flyer foe, 6-4, 6-0. TAMUK's other singles win came from junior
Annika Andersson Gomez, who won 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7). Noll lost in a tie breaker at the No.2 spot, 6-3, 2-6, 0-1 (5-10), while senior
Manuela Turolo did the same, falling 4-6, 6-4, 0-1 (6-10).Â
The Javelinas will take momentum from today's win into not only tomorrow' 10:30 a.m. match against No.38 Emporia St., but also into the two top-35 matches that are to follow, when the team opens up its home schedule against No.31 UT-Tyler next Thursday and No.19 DBU next Saturday at the Javelina Tennis Courts.Â
