Orlando, FL – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team played two matches Tuesday at the USTA National Campus, completing a weather-delayed match against Tampa before turning around for their regularly scheduled matchup against Slippery Rock, falling 4-1 and 4-3 respectively to drop to 4-5 on the season.
vs. Tampa
Monday's match against Tampa was suspended due to weather and completed Tuesday morning. Tampa took the doubles point, winning two of three courts. Andrea Landaeta and Emma Halvarsson provided Kingsville's lone doubles win with a 6-4 victory at court three, but it was not enough to claim the point.
In singles, Annika Andersson Gomez provided the lone win for the Javelinas, battling back to defeat Ida Axelsson 7-6, 6-1. Maya Donkor fell in straight sets and Landaeta dropped her match as well. Kaitlin Blount's loss to Max Lippens gave Tampa their fourth point and clinched the match, with the courts of Guadalupe Tocci and Halvarsson ending unfinished. The Javelinas fell 4-1.
vs. Slippery Rock
The second match of the day proved to be a battle, though Kingsville again dropped the doubles point. Tocci and Donkor won a tight 7-6 [7-4] match at court one, but losses at courts two and three gave Slippery Rock the early advantage.
In singles, three Javelinas delivered standout performances. Donkor took down Alissia Kivi in a pair of tight sets, 7-5, 7-6 [7-4], while Andersson Gomez was dominant with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Leontina Slovak. Halvarsson provided the most dramatic win of the day, dropping the first set before battling back to force a super tiebreaker and claiming the match 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 [11-9].
The match was close throughout the day, with two of Kingsville's losses coming down to agonizingly tight tiebreakers. Tocci fell in a third-set super tiebreaker 0-1 [9-11], just two points away from stealing the match point, while Landaeta suffered a similar fate, falling 0-1 [8-10] in her deciding set. Slippery Rock escaped with the 4-3 victory.
The Javelinas return to the court Thursday against Bryant University at 11:30 a.m. at the USTA National Campus for their final match in Orlando.
