San Angelo - With a dominating 6-1 win, the Texas A&M - Kingsville women's tennis team avenged a loss from last season and grabbed a season-opening win over Northeastern St..
The match was played on a neutral site, much like it was last season when the River Hawks took a tight, 4-3 win over the Javelinas. Kingsville came out on top of the rematch, however, in a total team win to start the season 1-0.
"It was a great team win," Head Coach
Autumn Wollenzien said. "Everyone fought hard and did their part. The team was really focused on making a statement for ourselves, wanting to start the season well."
The Javelinas started the day by taking the doubles point courtesy of an
Andrea Landaeta and
Annalena Noll 6-2 win and a down-to-the-wire, 7-5 win from
Luna Jokanovic and
Kaitlin Blount to take the split doubles point and get their first point of the match.
The singles matches were, for the most part, not nearly as tight, as Landaeta won 6-1, 6-2, Noll won 6-2, 6-2, and
Guadalupe Tocci won 6-4, 6-2, giving Kingsville its four winning points just from those blowouts. The rest of the matches, piloted by
Manuela Turolo,
Annika Andersson Gomez, and Jokanovic were all very close.
Andersson Gomez took a 7-6, 6-4 win, while the two seniors, Turolo and Jokanovic, each went to three sets. Turolo took a 6-3, 4-6 (10-2) win while Jokanovic fell 6-3, 2-6, 5-7.
"We played the way we should have and I'm happy about that," Wollenzien said.
The Javelinas will be back in action next weekend when they head to Kansas for a pair of matches. They're set to face off against Newman in Wichita on Friday and Washburn in Topeka on Saturday.
