Wichita, KS - The Texas A&M - Kingsville women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season as the Javelinas fell, 5-2, against the Newman Jets in the first of two matches in the sunflower state for the Javelinas.
After opening their season with a 6-1 win over Northeastern last weekend, the Javelinas fall to 1-1 on the year. Both of their points came from singles matches, one from
Guadalupe Tocci and one from
Annalena Noll.
"I'm proud of the way my team fought today," Head Coach
Autumn Wollenzien said. "All the matches were close and my team fought hard. These kinds of matches help to build resilience and that's what we will take away from it."
Despite losing the point, TAMUK split the doubles matches, with
Andrea Landaeta teaming up with Noll to take down the Jets' Nicole Bono and Luciana Flores Urey, 6-2. Tocci, Kingsville's No.2, beat Ana Zeikidze 6-4, 6-1. Noll, playing in the No.3 spot for the Hogs, beat Newman's Bono 6-1, 6-3.
All four of Kingsville's losses in singles came in three sets, with the Javelinas fighting for every points. At the No.1 spot,
Luna Jokanovic lost 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 3-6, while
Manuela Turolo lost at No.4, 6-3, 6-7, 5-7. At the five and six singles spots respectively,
Annika Andersson Gomez lost 2-6, 7-6, 2-6 and
Andrea Landaeta lost 1-6, 6-2 (7-10).
TAMUK will travel about two hours within Kansas to Topeka, where the No.11 squad in the nation awaits. The Javelinas will take on No.11 Washburn at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
