Kingsville - After a great start to their year in San Antonio last weekend, the Texas A&M Kingsville womens' tennis team is headed to Corpus Christ to compete in TAMUCC's Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open this weekend.

The Javelinas will not have to travel very far for their second tournament of the fall season, which, in addition to TAMUK, will feature Rice, UTSA, UTRGV, Lamar, Abilene Christian and the host Islanders.

This will be the 22nd year that TAMUCC has hosted The Islander Open and, this year, is named for a former Islander and Marine who gave his life in service of his country in 2016.

"The competition this weekend will get more and more competitive," Head Coach Autumn Wollenzien said. "We also hope to get better and better with each match we play."
Last weekend at St. Mary's Al and Lily Kimbell Memorial Tournament, the team started its year on the right foot with multiple Javelinas winning their draws and multiple others making it to their draw's finals.

Redshirt senior Luna Jokanovic won her draw of the women's open singles and combined with senior Manuela Turolo to win a pair of matches in their doubles draw, making it to the finals.

Freshman Elise Broden, in the first match of her collegiate career, also won her singles draw while redshirt sophomore Kaitlin Blount made the finals in her draw, losing just one set between her quarterfinal and semifinal matches.

In addition to their on-court achievements at the tournament, Jokanovic was also named to the tournament's All-Sportsmanship Team.

"We wanted to make sure we honored Brother Al and Coach Kimbell during this event, as they both were all about sportsmanship throughout their career," St. Mary's Director of Tennis Bill Macom said in a press release announcing the award. 

The Javelinas' competition this weekend will be split over Friday and Saturday, match results will be available here.
