Javelinas upset No. 42 Dallas Baptist with comeback win

DALLAS, Texas - Kicking off their final weekend of the regular season, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team faced a tall task in the No. 42 Dallas Baptist Patriots, but were more than up to the task, coming from behind for the upset win, 4-3.

The Javelinas (10-8, 4-5 LSC) secure an overall record above .500 for the first time since the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season and still have the chance to finish .500 in conference play with one more match. The win is the Javelinas' third over a ranked opponent on the season, previously downing No. 48 Indiana Pennsylvania and No. 16 Georgia College.

The Patriots held the advantage to open the match, sweeping all three of the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The sweep snaps the team of Alessa Maier and Milou ter Morsche's eight-match win streak.

However, the duo did not let the doubles loss get to them, as Ter Morsche and Maier secured the first singles wins of the afternoon for the Javelinas. Ter Morsche turned in the first victory on Court 4, coming from behind to take set one, 6-4, before taking a comfortable win in set two, 6-3.

Maier fended off fierce competition on Court 1 in a hotly contested first set, 7-5, before pulling away late in set two to secure the win, 6-4. With the victory, Maier extends her singles winning streak to twelve matches.

With the Hogs trailing, 2-3, Manuela Turolo was next to deliver a point for the Javelinas on Court 2 and tie the match. After dropping the first set, 2-6, Turolo roared back from behind to win a tiebreaker second set, 7-6. Coming from behind again from nearly match point in set three, she swept the two extra sets to upset No. 47 Leonie Schondelmaier, 7-5.

The two teams tied at 3-3, Annika Andersson Gomez secured the final singles match, and the Javelina victory in a three-set war on Court 5 lasting over three hours. Nearly replicating the story from Court 2, Gomez dropped set one, 2-6, before securing a clutch win in the tiebreaker second set, 7-6. With one set to play, Gomez stormed out to an early 5-2 lead before her opponent staged her own comeback to tie the match. From there, Gomez regained her form and controlled the final two sets to complete the comeback, 7-5.
