KINGSVILLE, Texas - Hosting their final two home matches of the regular season, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team opened the weekend with a dominant sweep over the Western New Mexico Mustangs, 7-0.
The Javelinas (8-8, 2-5 LSC) snap a four-match skid after narrowly falling to No. 39 St. Mary's their last time out. The Mustangs (1-18, 0-8 LSC) continue their struggles, dropping their twelfth match in a row.Â
The Hogs got the day started on the right foot with a clean sweep of the doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. The team of
Luna Jokanovic and
Manuela Turolo tallied the first win of nine on the day for the Javelinas, 6-1.
The No. 17 team of
Alessa Maier and
Milou ter Morsche as well as the duo of
Ella Hester and
Annika Andersson Gomez followed up in quick succession at 6-2 and 6-3, respectively. Maier and Ter Morsche extend their doubles win streak to seven matches.
Things kept rolling for the Javelinas in singles play as Ter Morche and
Raina Zaffar both delivered 6-1, 6-0 victories on Courts 4 and 6. National No. 6 Maier chalked up the match-securing win ten minutes later on Court 1, 6-2, 6-2. With the win, Maier extends her singles streak into double digits with an incredible ten wins in a row.Â
Jokanovic and Gomez ticked off two more straight set victories on Courts 3 and 5. Jokanovic dominated with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win while Gomez controlled her match from start to finish to take the win, 6-3, 6-3.
Court 2 was the only court where the Mustangs were able to take a set off of the Javelinas, as Turolo fell into an early deficit after dropping the first set, 6-4. Turolo roared back with a 6-4 response of her own, however, to send the match into a super tiebreaker third set. She took early control of the tiebreaker, though her opponent managed to come back and tie it at 9-9. Turolo was not rattled though, and after trailing at 9-10, rattled off three straight points to win the tiebreaker, 12-10.
