SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team took on the Northeastern State Riverhawks in their final non-conference matchup before Lone Star Conference play kicks off in earnest, falling to the Riverhawks on a neutral site, 3-4.
The Javelinas (6-4, 0-1 LSC) return to LSC play ranked No. 50 overall in the country by the ITA after two wins over ranked opponents in non-conference play.
Opening the match, the Javelinas took the doubles point with a clean sweep on all three courts.
Alessa Maier and
Milou ter Morsche secured Court 1, 6-4.
Luna Jokanovic and
Manuela Turolo similarly took the win on Court 2, 6-4.
Annika Andersson Gomez and
Ella Hester won on Court 3 in a tiebreaker contest, 7-6 [8-6].
Though entering singles matches with a 1-0 advantage, the Riverhawks took four of the six singles matches to snatch the victory. Getting wins for the Javelinas in singles play was Maier on Court 1 and Jokanovic on Court 2.
Maier controlled her match nearly from start to finish, dominating the first set, 6-0, and never falling behind by more than a game before winning three straight in set two to take the win, 6-4. Jokanovic earned a hard-fought win, forcing a third set after dropping set one, 1-6, by securing a 6-1 win of her own in set two. Battling with her opponent in a third set that was tied at 6-6, Jokanovic rattled off six straight points in the tiebreaker to eventually take the win in set three, 7-6 [7-4].
UP NEXT
The Javelinas are back at home as the kick off LSC play once more with matches against Arkansas-Fort Smith and Cameron. The Hogs take on UAFS first on Friday before meeting with Cameron on Saturday with both matches scheduled for 10 a.m.
