Javelinas drop close one to Slippery Rock to close Spring Break road trip

The Hogs came up just short, 3-4, against The Rock after dropping the doubles point

Orlando, Fla. - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team closed out its two-game road trip to Florida with a 3-4 loss to Slippery Rock on Thursday night at the USTA National Campus.

The Javelinas (6-3, 0-1 LSC) close out their stint at USTA's Spring Break Tennis 1-1 after winning on Tuesday against No. 48 Indiana Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock opened the match with what would prove to be the deciding factor, sweeping the doubles matches to open the score at 1-0 heading into singles. The Hogs got three back on the singles courts, splitting the six matches but falling just short of the needed four for the victory.

Milou ter Morsche picked up the first win for the Javelinas on Court 4 with a comfortable win. Ter Morsche won set one, 6-2, and was poised to head for another dominating win in set two, 5-1, before her opponent conceded the match due to retirement.

Raina Zaffar added the second point for the Hogs on Court 6 with a clean 6-2, 6-3 win. Zaffar has now won eight singles matches in a row with her last loss being over a month ago on Feb. 10 against Georgia College.

Alessa Maier, now No. 8 in the most recent ITA National Singles rankings released on Wednesday, secured the Javelina's third and final point in another three-set thriller on Court 1. Maier and her opponent traded the first two sets at 6-2 each before she secured the match in the tiebreaker third set in an incredibly close duel, 11-9.

Next up, the Hogs travel a bit closer to home as they take on Northeastern State at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex in San Antonio on March 18.
