Javelinas upset No.16 Georgia College on the road

A thriller saw the Hogs come out on top to start 2-0

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team faced a tough task on the road as they faced nationally-ranked Georgia College during the opening weekend, but they were up to the task in a match where almost every singles match went to three sets to take the win, 4-3.

The Javelinas (2-0, LSC 0-0) open the season perfect after winning the opening match against Emmanuel on Friday. No. 16 Georgia College (1-2, PBC 0-0) drop their second in a row after falling to No. 5 St. Leo last Saturday. This is the first win for TAMUK against a ranked opponent since taking down Midwestern State during the Lone Star Conference tournament in 2022.

The Hogs got off on the right foot in doubles play, taking the doubles point 2-1 after wins from the teams of Alessa Maier and Milou ter Morsche as well as Annika Andersson Gomez and Ella Hester.

Holding a 1-0 lead heading into the singles play, the Javelinas needed to win three of the six matches to take the win, and that is what they got in dramatic fashion. Of the six singles matches, five of them went to three sets with Gomez being the only one in a two set match, taking the victory 6-2, 6-0.

Ter Morsche added the second singles victory, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Needing only one more win from three matches, national No.10 Maier delivered. After taking winning the first set 7-5 then dropping set two 1-6, Maier roared back to dominate set three and secure the win for the Hogs, 6-0.

The Javelinas will be on the road once more next weekend, though much closer to home as they take on Collin College and Ouachita Baptist in Dallas. The match against Collin is slated for Saturday, Feb. 17 and the match against Ouachita the day after, Feb. 18 with both matches scheduled for 10 a.m. The match against Collin will be classified as an exhibition as it is a two-year school.
