ARLINGTON, Texas – Day two of the ITA Division II Regional Championships kicked off on Friday with three Javelinas still in contention in singles play and two duos of Javs in play in doubles.
In singles play, Alessa Maier continued her momentum from yesterday to win her pair of matches. Maier was in control from the start, defeating Kyndall Quiroz of St. Mary's, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals of the main bracket. Later, Maier was even more commanding in her quarterfinal match, taking the win in straight sets for the fourth time this tournament, 6-2, 6-0.
Maier will take the stage in the final day of the ITA Regionals against Kateryna Rudenko of Cameron in the main bracket semifinals.
Teammate Manuela Turolo had action in the main bracket round of 16 as well against UT Tyler's Muskan Gupta. Unfortunately, Gupta proved too much for Turolo, taking the match 6-2, 6-3.
Ella Hester faced the quarterfinals of bracket B against Oshini Herath of Lubbock Christian. A hard-fought effort fell short for Hester after a tiebreaker first set, 7-6, 6-2.
Doubles play saw no less action for the Javelinas, who treated spectators to a duo of nailbiting matches.
Milou ter Morsche and Manuela Turolo received a bye for the first round of matches in bracket B, giving them a ticket straight to the semifinals. The duo took advantage of the extra rest to the fullest.
Ter Morsche and Turolo started their doubles day with a dominating victory over Taylor Nichols and Allison Lent of Lubbock Christian, 8-1, to advance to the bracket B finals. There, ter Morsche and Turolo faced Chloe O'Connor and Montserrat Salazar of UT Permian Basin.
In a match that came down to the absolute wire, ter Morsche and Turolo clawed out a 9-8 victory after winning the tiebreaker set 9-7. The win would crown ter Morsche and Turolo the winners of doubles bracket B.
In the main doubles bracket, Hester and Annika Andersson Gomez squared off against Muskan Gupta and Allison Schwartz of UT Tyler. Like their teammates in bracket B, Hester and Gomez would take their opponents to the limit but would fall just short in a hard-fought match, 9-7.
The final day of the ITA Regional kicks off tomorrow with Maier as the only Javelina in action as she vies for the South Central singles crown, starting with her semifinals match at 9:00 a.m.
