ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team started day one of competition on Thursday at the ITA Division II Regional Championships in Arlington, Texas.
Singles competition was highlighted by wins from Alessa Maier in her first two matches of the tournament, downing Magda Wawrowska of Cameron in the round of 64 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Maier followed up the victory with an even more commanding performance in the round of 32, once again winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16 in the main draw tomorrow.
Joining her teammate in the round of 16 will be Manuela Turolo. An impressive, 6-1, 6-2 victory in the round of 64 over Skylar Minns of Midwestern State gave Turolo the momentum she carried over in her round of 32 match. After a hard-fought win in the first set, 7-6, Turolo put the match away cleanly with a 6-3 win in set two.
Elsewhere in singles play, Ella Hester followed in her teammates' examples in bracket B. Two commanding victories in the round of 32 and round of 16, both by scores of 6-3, 6-1, will see Hester continuing singles play tomorrow in the quarterfinals of bracket B.
Isabel Neumer, Milou ter Morsche, and Annika Andersson Gomez rounded out a great first round of matches for the Javelinas, securing wins in their round of 64 matchups. However, all three fell in the round of 32.
Doubles play also saw a solid day from the Javs. The team of Hester and Gomez survived and advanced, finding victory in the round of 32 and round of 16 to the scores of 8-6 and 8-3 respectively.
The duo of Maier and Neumer finished the day with a win in the round of 32 over a duo from Lubbock Christian, 8-4. However, the two fell in the round of 16 after a hard-fought battle, 6-8. The team of Luna Jokanovic and Raina Zaffar gave it all they had but came up short in both of their matches, 8-3 and 8-5.
Hester and Gomez continue doubles play tomorrow in the quarterfinals of the main draw. Meanwhile, ter Morsche and Turolo were given a bye round for bracket B of the tournament doubles. They will be in action as well tomorrow in the bracket B semifinals.
Day two of the ITA Regional kicks off bright and early tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
