KINGSVILLE, Texas – Head coach Tanya Allen-Gonzalez of Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball announced on Thursday morning that Alexa Ruiz will be named an assistant coach for the Javelinas ahead of the 2023 season.
Ruiz earns the full-time position after five consecutive years in and around the volleyball program at Kingsville going back to her time as a student-athlete under Allen-Gonzalez.
"I am so excited to have Alexa on the staff," said Allen Gonzalez about the hire. "She is smart, hardworking, and she brings a very positive energy to the team."
Ruiz will now make the transition to full-time assistant coach after spending this past Spring as a graduate assistant on staff.
In the Fall of 2022, Ruiz served on the Blue and Gold's bench as a student assistant as the Javelinas posted a 20-10 overall record, going 12-4 in Lone Star Conference play and a perfect 9-0 record at home inside the Steinke Physical Education Center. Additionally, Ruiz contributed to the development of two first team All-Americans in Ayanna Jackson and Nicole Murff.
As a player, Ruiz appeared in 267 sets as a defensive specialist for the Javelinas, recording 499 digs and an average of 1.87 digs per set from 2018-2021.
The Javelinas are set to begin their 2023 campaign at home as part of the TAMUK Invitational with a double header on Sept. 1 against Ouachita Baptist and Colorado State-Pueblo.
