KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team lost its 2023 season opener, 7-0, to Division I, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon.
"The score might not reflect it, but I think we played close to our potential," said head coach Autumn Wollenzien. "Corpus Christi is a really good team, and I know they are the best team we are going to face this season. We had difficult conditions to play in today, but we didn't make it easy in any match today, and I'm proud of the girls for that."
The Islanders took an early 1-0 lead on a chilly afternoon in Kingsville, sweeping the doubles points.
Alessa Maier and Milou Ter Morsche pushed the Islanders' Emma Aucagne and Palina Aulevich in every game at the No. 2 spot but fell with a final score of 6-4.
In the singles competition, TAMUK's Anika Anderson put on an impressive performance winning the Javelinas only set on the day, winning her first set against Saulevich, 2-6, before dropping the next two 6-2,7-5.
The Javelinas are back in action on Feb. 18, as they take on Harding in Dallas, Texas.
