Box Score KINGSVILLE, Texas – Three different Javelinas triumphed in singles play, but the No. 73 Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team fell just short against the No. 24 Angelo State Rambelles in a 4-3 defeat on Thursday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at the Javelina Tennis Courts in Kingsville, Texas.
The Javelinas now have a record of 9-10 and are 4-4 in the LSC. ASU is 15-6 overall and 7-1 in conference.
ASU didn't drop a single flight in doubles, taking the No. 1 match, 6-2, the No. 2 contest, 6-2, and the third flight 6-4 to go up by one.
The first player to get the Javs on the board in singles play was freshman Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy), who won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. This triumph represented Turolo's 10th of the season, including her last three-in-a-row.
Sophomores Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) then fought their way to a pair of three-set victories in the second and third flights, respectively. Maier dropped the opening frame but dominated the rest of the way before her opponent retired, making the final 5-7, 6-1, 2-0. Sante and ASU's Ena Ovcina split the first two sets and the first 10 games in the final stanza, but Sante managed to pull it out at the end in a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 decision.
Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, wins by ASU flights one, four and five were enough for them to clinch the victory.
