Javelinas wrap up combined events at Dave Noble Relays

Jezell Shows placed ninth with a score of 4,083 in the heptathlon, while Nathan Melton took fourth in the decathlon with 6,089

SAN ANGELO, Texas – On Friday, The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program wrapped up the combined events portion of the competition at the Dave Noble Relays at LeGrande Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field, as sophomore Jezell Shows (San Antonio, Texas) placed ninth in the heptathlon and freshman Nathan Melton (Lorena, Texas) took fourth in the decathlon. 
 
Melton's fourth-place finish came following a solid second day in which he entered with 3,259 points and excited with 6,089. He was joined in the event by sophomore Roel De Leon (Edinburg, Texas), who claimed sixth with 5,158, and redshirt senior Dean Wallace (Geronimo, Texas) in eighth with 5,323.
 
De Leon and Melton placed back-to-back in the 110m hurdle portion of the event, with De Leon scoring 789 thanks to a time of 15.5 and Melton 634 at 19.91. 
 
Next, Melton won the discus after slinging the implement 44.40m (145-8), adding 754 to his total. He then took sixth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.85m (12-7.50) for 576 points. 
 
Wallace and Melton finished in order in the javelin, with Wallace second at 49.49m (162-4) and Melton third at 47.43m (155-7).
 
 De Leon topped the field in the 1500m, rounding out the competition with a time of 5:07.92 for 515 points, while Melton claimed sixth at 5:48.07.
 
Shows meanwhile placed ninth, after entering the day in 12th with 2,654 points to her name. She opened day two in the long jump, where she reached 5.27m (17-3.50), adding 634 to her score, placing seventh. She then tossed the javelin 22.39m (73-5) for 333 points, before adding 651 in her final event with a 2:33.35 time in the 800m. 
 
Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the Dave Noble Relays, with the meet scheduled to begin at noon.
