KINGSVILLE, Texas – Three days after earning their fourth win of the season and for the first time in 2022, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis is preparing to take the court at home and they'll do so against their first conference opponent of the year, the UT Permian Basin Falcons, who the Javelinas will square off against on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Javelina Tennis Courts in Kingsville, Texas.
The Javs pushed their record back up to .500 with a 5-2 win over Prairie View A&M on Sunday in which they won five of six singles matches. One of those triumphs was a come-from-behind effort from freshman Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy), whose 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 victory was one of the final pieces of the puzzle. Against the Falcons, Turolo will be looking for her third straight win in singles play.
Turolo has also settled into the No. 3 flight in doubles play paired with sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany). This tandem has won three straight since being put into the third spot, putting them one victory shy of matching the longest win streak put together by a TAMUK pairing in 2021. For the season, the Javs own a 4-2 record in the third flight in doubles play.
Wednesday's match will be the first time since 2019 the Falcons and Javelinas have squared off in Kingsville and UTPB will be attempting to knock off TAMUK for the first time since 2014. In each of the last two meetings between these squads, the Javs have swept the Falcons, 7-0, including a 2021 meeting in which UTPB only managed to take two sets in singles play. Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) both won in dominant fashion, with Sante coming out on top, 6-0, 6-0 and Zaffar nearly duplicating those scores, winning 6-0, 6-1.
