SAN ANTONIO-The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field teams wrapped up the first meet of the outdoor season on Saturday, with the throwing crew visiting the Alamo City for the 2022 Trinity Invitational at the Trinity University Track and Field Stadium.Â
On Friday, the group competed in the hammer throw with senior Stephen Cardenas (Ingleside, Texas), claiming silver after heaving the implement 50.13m (164-05). In the women's iteration, sophomore Katryna Hernandez (Skidmore, Texas) took sixth place with a mark of 44.81m (147-00), while senior Diana Bustos (Mission, Texas) placed ninth at 41.02m (134-07).
Hernandez powered her way into a first-place finish in the shot put Saturday, as she reached 14.12m (46-04) on her fifth attempt. Senior Gertrudis Balli joined Hernandez (Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico)Â in the event, tossing the shot 12.24m (40-02) to take fifth.
In the men's shot put, redshirt senior D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamaica) finished atop the leader board with a mark of 16.52m (54-02.5), while sophomore Felix Hernandez (Edinburg Texas) took eighth, 13.98m (45-08).
Balli bested all competitors in the women's discus, flinging the disc 45.18m (148-02), as Hernandez finished fourth with a distance of 39.82m (130-07). Later, in the men's competition, Delancy measured at 45.17m (148-02) to claim fourth.
Outdoors, the Javelinas next visit Abilene, Texas for the Wes Kittley Invitational on Mar. 17, after redshirt senior Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas) and the men's 4x400m relay squad compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships on Mar. 11.Â
