Kingsville - The first meet of the outdoor season for the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's track and field teams saw both squads pick up wins over the Angelo State Rams, with the men winning 104-83, and the women taking a 100-79 win, while junior women's thrower Yosiris Cordoba smashed the school record in the discus throw.

In the second annual Blue and Gold Battle between the two Lone Star Conference rivals, both Javelina teams avenged their losses from one year ago in San Angelo, and each put up top marks in the nation along the way. In the midst of the win, Cordoba tossed 52.77m in the disc, the longest throw in the nation in D2 so far this year, and the new school record. On the men's side, junior sprinter Malachi Barendilla's 10.32 in the 100m is also the new top mark in the nation early in the outdoor season.

In addition to those nation-leading marks, two other performances on the men's side put Kingsville near the top of all of D2. The 4x100m Relay crew of Jayden McCoy, DaTavus Pope, Ausencio Martinez, and Malachi Barendilla ran a 40.50, winning the event and setting the new second-fastest time run in the outdoor season. Freshman pole vaulter Trevor Upton, who won the first LSC Field Athlete Award of his career during the indoor season, began his outdoor campaign by clearing a bar set at 5.20m, the second-best mark in the nation.

Overall, the Javelinas won 23 events at the meet to help propel the teams to a sweep, 11 on the women's side, and 12 on the men's. They will now have a week off of outdoor competition as the teams wrap up their indoor seasons next week at the NCAA D2 Indoor National Championships in Virginia Beach, where they will send eight athletes to compete in six events.
