San Angelo - In the first time sending their full squads into action, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's and women's track and field teams set eight new top-20 marks in the nation so far this season, and notched nine top-10 marks in school history across three days of competition at Angelo State's David Noble Relays.
Among those excellent performances were three top-10 times/scores put up in all of D2 so far this outdoor season, including a 53.79 run in the women's 400m by sophomore
Oneika Brissett, the second-fastest time in the nation. That time was enough to win the event finals after she qualified with a 56.94. In the same event, sophomore
Sakara Wade placed third with a 55.12, the 16th-fastest time in the nation and the new ninth-fastest in school history. In the same event on the men's side it was another underclassman, freshman
Joseph Mouaha, who leapt up the nation leaderboard. His 47.29 in the 400m prelims is not only the seventh-fastest time in school history, but also the 11th-fastest time run in the event in all of D2 so far this year.
On the men's side, the 4x100m relay crew of
Jayden McCoy,
Malachi Barendilla, Ausencio Martienz, and
DaTavus Pope improved on their already top-of-the-nation time with a 40.42, the new seventh-fastest time run in the nation this season.Â
The Decathlon, which took place across Thursday and Friday, was a huge success for the Javelinas, who put all three of their competitors into the top 20 in the nation. Leading the way was freshman
Christopher Gonzalez, who scored 6266, the new sixth-best time in the nation, as the 10th-best in school history. Included in his performance was a 7.59m long jump, the 10th-longest in school history. Not far behind Gonzalez in the overall event were two other underclassmen, freshman
Jason Gordon and sophomore
Caden Soliz, who scored 6100 and 5879 respectively. Godron's score is the 10th-best in the nation while Soliz's is the 17th-best.
In the women's shot put, two different Javelinas placed top five in the event notched their names on the school record book. Junior
Karina Alvarez, who is the Lone Star Conference's reigning indoor champion in the event, threw 14.09m, jumping her to 6th in school history and 18th in the nation. Not far behind was junior
Kaylea Demetrius, who placed fourth with a 13.85m throw, good for 10th in school history.
In the 800m invite, sophomore
Kristian Green ran 1:53.30, earning him a spot on the team record book with the 10th-fastest time in school history.
The Javelinas will now look ahead to a split weekend, where the teams will compete at both the Texas Relays in Austin from Wednesday to Friday, and the Trinity Invitational in San Antonio on Friday and Saturday.
