Box Score EDINBURG, Texas – Freshman Manuela Turolo (Cividale Del Friuli, Italy) combined with sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) to take the No. 3 flight in doubles play, then outdueled her opponent in the sixth flight in singles, but the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis was dealt a 6-1 loss by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros on Thursday afternoon in Edinburg, Texas at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
TAMUK's record drops to 3-4 with the loss, while UTRGV is 6-3.
The doubles matches started with the Vaqueros winning the second flight, but Turolo and Maier evened the score by winning, 6-3, making back-to-back matches TAMUK's No. 3 tandem has earned a victory. A hard fought No. 1 contest went against the Javelinas, with UTRGV's Isabelle Bahr and Barbara Martinez narrowly slipping past junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and sophomore Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India), 6-4.
Turolo's third singles triumph of the season started with a hotly contested first set that she won 7-5 and the freshman clinched her win by a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Three sets were needed in both the first and fifth flights, but UTRGV found a way to come out on top in both instances. Donkor started the No. 1 match by snagging the first stanza, 6-3, but couldn't find a way to lock up a second set, as Bahr came back to win, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) also took the opening frame in her match at No. 5 and only narrowly dropped the second before Sandra Putz secured the flight for UTRGV, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5).
