AUSTIN, Texas — It didn't take long for redshirt senior
Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas) to log an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the decathlon, as he scored 7,202 points at the 94th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Truist at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of Texas. Harper claimed eighth, representing Texas A&M-kingsville as one of only two NCAA Division II athletes to meet the qualifying standards, with the Lorena, Texas native besting 13 DI athletes, including six Power Five competitors.
He carried a score of 3,760 into day two and added 917 more in the first event after clocking in at 14.45 in the 110m hurdles, to tie his personal best and place third. Next, he added 508 in the discus and 849 in the pole vault, where he cleared a bar of 4.80m (15-9) on his third attempt. In the javelin, Harper launched the implement 50.15m (164-6) on his first toss. It was his best performance in the event since he placed second at the 2019 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Portales, New Mexico. He then paced his way to a time of 4:56.15 in the 1500m run, closing out the competition with 582 more points to reach his 7,202 total.
After his eighth-place performance, Harper ranks first on the DII performance list, placing himself in prime position to make the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships, which kick off on May 26, in Allendale, Michigan.
Sophomore
Gabriel Field (China Spring, Texas) joined Harper in the Capital City as he placed 23rd in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.31.
On Friday, the men's 4x100m relay team will take to the track at 10 a.m., while junior
Jordan Wilson (Blytheville, Arkansas) competes in the long jump. Additionally, the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams will be in action at 12:15 p.m. and 12:45 p.m., respectively.
