LUBBOCK, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field program completed the 2022 Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, with senior
D.J. Delancy (Bethel Town, Jamaica) claiming gold in the men's shot put, while sophomore
Katryna Hernandez took silver in the women's iteration of the shot put, rewriting the school record books.
Delancy and the men's team finished fourth in the Hub City, amassing 81 points across two days of competition, while Hernandez and the women took seventh at 33 points.
The Jamaicans' last throw was his best throw at the indoor championships, as the senior heaved the implement 17.34m (56-10.75) to climb atop the leader board while logging a new personal best. Additionally, Delancy's mark serves as an NCAA Provisional Qualifying measure that ranks him 18th nationally. Junior
Marco Arevalo (Falfurrias, Texas) joined Delancy on the podium as he took third after reaching 15.95m (52-4) on his fifth toss of the day.
Hernandez, meanwhile, cemented herself atop the Blue and Gold record books after reaching 14.36m (47-1.50) on her final attempt, surpassing Valerie Vrana's mark of 45-9.5 from the 2016 league meet. In the process, Hernandez's leapfroged Mia Van Oudsthoorn of Angelo State with her record-breaking toss to take second.
Redshirt senior
Dean Wallace (Geronimo, Texas) claimed his second bronze medal of the meet after scoring 5,001 for a new season-best in the heptathalon, moving him him into the 19th position among NCAA Division II competitors. Out of seven events, the Navarro products' best performance came in the pole vault, as he collected 819 points after clearing a bar set at 4.70m (15-5) on his second attempt.
On the track, the men's 4x400m relay team earned silver as the team comprised of senior
Joseph Swierc (Falls City, Texas), redshirt senior
Johnathon Harper (Lorena, Texas), sophomore
Sterling Riles (Houston, Texas), and classmate
Michael Samihamba (Dallas, Texas) clocked in at 3:13.45 for the programs second school record of the day. The quartets' time places them 10th on the D2 performance list. Previously, the 2005 relay crew held the bench mark after completing the race in 3:13.73 at the national meet.
Thanks to an 8.08 time in the 60 m hurdles, Harper added another silver to his trophy case, marking his third podium finish of the meet; after placing third in the pole vault on Friday, Riles represents another relay team member to find individual success, as he picked up points in the open 400 m, placing fourth in 48.55.
Freshman
Cody Fountain (Portland, Texas) capped off an exciting first season in Blue and Gold with a third-place finish in the 800 m, at 1:53.40.

Lidia Lowe (Corpus Christi, Texas) took fourth in 3:55.46.

Cynai Christopher (Missouri City, Texas) picked up points in multiple events as she finished sixth in the 400 m at 56.61 before clocking in at 24.89 in the 200 m for an eight-place finish.
Additionally, in the 60 m hurdles, classmate
Kennedi Silmon (Corpus Christi, Texas) placed seventh in 9.00.
The meet champion in both divisions was West Texas A&M, as the Buffs scored 206 points, while the Lady Buffs earned 215.5. A select few await an invite to the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships, which begins Friday, Mar. 11, at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
