KINGSVILLE, Texas – With one match in the books in 2022 for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team, the Javelinas' next chance to get back on the court comes on Saturday in Plano, Texas, where they'll be taking on the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles at 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. meeting with the Weatherford College Wolves.
TAMUK's spring started with arguably their toughest assignment against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but their matchups against the Eagles and Wolves, two teams they'll be playing for the first time, will give the Javs another opportunity to earn their first victory of the spring.
The Javelinas' doubles matches against the Islanders were the first opportunity for two of the team's tandems to take the court together, with junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and freshman Manuela Turolo (Cividale Del Friuli, Italy) occupying the second flight and sophomores Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) and Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) in the No. 3 spot. Donkor and Turolo will be attempting to replicate the chemistry Donkor had with Laura Montalvo in 2021, which led to seven victories in flight No. 1.
In singles play, no one picked up more wins a season ago than ter Morsche, who was an all-Lone Star Conference selection and followed that up a handful of fall triumphs that put her in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Central Regional Rankings. The sophomore from the Netherlands will be trying to recapture the form she showed in rattling off six straight wins to close out her freshman season.
Sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) was the closest Javelina to earning a win against Islanders before ultimately dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Maier's freshman season good enough to earn her an all-conference spot alongside ter Morsche and Donkor after she ended the regular season with five victories in six tries. Her first victory of 2021 came in the TAMUK's second match of the spring, something she'll have the opportunity to accomplish again in Plano.
