Hogs open up 2021 home slate with contest against Wolves

Kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium

The Matchup    
  • The Javelinas continue their 2021 campaign with the first home matchup of the year against Western Oregon
  • Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Pepsi Field at Javelina Stadium
  • The Javelinas last faced the Wolves in the 2019 season with WOU laying claim to a 26-14 win in Kingsville
  • Overall, Western Oregon leads the series 4-1 with a win in four consecutive matchups dating back to 2006
  • The game will broadcast live on the Javelina Sports Network presented by Mendoza's Pharmacy as well as KRIS 6 with Mark Inserra and Ralph Rubalcaba on the call
Scouting the Wolves    
  • WOU opened the year on the road in Golden, Colo., and came away with a 42-3 defeat at the hands of #10 Colorado Mines last week
  • a 22-yd field goal from Daniel Cossette was the lone score for the Wolves coming in the second quarter
  • CSM scored the first 14 points and the last 28 points of the contest
  • Ryan Worthley recorded 222 passing yards with one interception on 32 attempts as he was sacked three times in the loss
  • Omari Land ran for 30 yards, the only Wolf with more than five net yards
  • Justice Murphy, Thomas Wright and Jarren Ford all recorded four catches
  • Murphy led the group with 70 receiving yards, followed by 61 from Wright and 37 from Ford
  • Ryan Minnitiled the defensive effort with 10 total tackles
  • the Wolves recorded six tackles for loss as a group, with Jaylin Parnell leading the way with two
  • Parnell, along with L.J. Lovelace and Mack Little, all finished with one sack in the game
  • Billy Nelson had the lone interception for the WOU defense
  • As a team, the Wolves gave up 199 passing yards and four scores through the air, along with 160 yards and two touchdowns on the ground
Last Time Out    
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville opened up the 2021 season on the road in University Center, Mich., with a matchup against Saginaw Valley State
  • The Cardinals came away with the win in the contest by a score of 13-9
  • Josh McGowen was responsible for the lone Hog touchdown as his one-yard scamper capped off a 99-yard drive that started from a turnover on downs on the TAMUK one-yard line
  • The Cardinal defense repaid the favor twice over later in the second half, with the Javelinas' fourth-down attempt in the third quarter which they flipped into a 31-yard field goal from Connor Luksic
  • The final drive of the game had the Hogs down at the SVSU one-yard line but could not find the back of the end zone
  • A 10-yard rush from Tommy Scott was the lone offensive touchdown for SVSU, while Luksic converted a 22-yard field goal for the other score
2020 Rewind    
  • Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had the NCAA cancel all Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 Championships, the Javelinas played two games in the Spring of 2021
  • TAMUK faced Midwestern State on the road on March 6 and fell by a score of 45-34 to the Mustangs
  • Zadock Dinklemann threw for 316 yards and two scores in the loss, with one touchdown apiece to Ryan Martinez and Kevin Reynolds
  • The three remaining touchdowns scored came on the ground, one each from Amonte Bowen, Roger Hagan and Craig Clemons
  • The home contest against UT Permian Basin on March 20 as the Falcons won the contest at 17-2
  • The lone score from the Hogs came on a safety in the fourth quarter after Sergi Landeros was sacked for a six-yard loss early in the frame by David Kypuros
All About Head Coach Mike Salinas    
  • Mike Salinas was named the 12th head coach and 11th full-time head coach of Javelina football on December 20, 2019
  • Salinas played for the Javelinas from 1995 to 1999 and had his first collegiate coaching position as an assistant coach for TAMUK in 2002 as a member of Richard Cundiff's staff
  • The Hogs compiled a record of 30-7 with Salinas on staff, including back-to-back West Region Championships and two straight appearances in the NCAA Division II Semifinals in 2002 and 2003
  • Previous stops in the collegiate ranks for Salinas include West Texas A&M (2005-06) as the Buffs advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the first time in program history
  • Further stops include Sam Houston State (2006-08) and Hardin-Simmons (2011) before he was responsible for the opening of Robert Vela HS in 2012 in Edinburg, Texas
Offensive Measures    
  • The Javelinas return all 11 starters from the COVID-shortened Spring 2021 season on the offensive side of the ball
  • Zadock Dinklemann started both games under center for the Hogs
  • Dinklemann threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Mustangs
  • Dinklemann added another 74 yards in the loss to the Falcons to close out the spring season
  • Amonte Bowen led the ground game with 82 yards and one touchdown on 19 attempts
  • Christian Anderson was right behind him with 67 yards on 19 rushes
  • Craig Clemons and Roger Hagan are the other two rushers responsible for the remaining touchdowns scored on the ground with one apiece
  • Kevin Reynolds and Ryan Martinez caught the two touchdown passes from Dinklemann in the spring season
  • Reynolds finished with 93 receiving yards on six catches, while Martinez added 77 yards on 10 grabs
  • Ty Chisum was the other Javelina with over 70 receiving yards as he finished with 79 on six catches
Defense Mechanisms    
  • 10 starters on defense will be back for the Fall 2021 campaign
  • Isaiah Jacobs led the defense with 14 tackles in the two games, eight solo and one for loss
  • Korey Louis, Brian Miller and Jakari Landry all finished in double digit tackles between the two games at 13, 12, and 10, respectively
  • Miller added a team-high three tackles for loss along with two QB hurries
  • Two of Miller's TFLs went in as sacks for a combined 22 yards lost
  • Louis also added two QB hurries to go with one forced fumble and a fumble recovery
  • Jacobs intercepted one pass between the games, while Derrion Warner snagged the other
  • Jacobs added a forced fumble while Tevita Mounga picked up a loose ball
  • Landry and Xavier Henderson both added a half-sack on the two games
  • David Kypuros and James Perez both posted a sack of their own
  • Kypuros' sack directly led to the safety in the loss to UTPB
