Kingsville - Texas A&M-Kingsville was not able to hold onto its halftime lead as it fell, 34-27, Saturday at Javelina Stadium.
The Javelinas (3-5, 2-4 LSC) led 20-19 as both teams went to break after
Jack Turner found
Kevin Holmes Jr. for a two-yard touchdown pass. The Wolves (6-2, 5-1 LSC) responded in the third quarter however, scoring 15 points and building an insurmountable lead in the second half.
Western Oregon University rushed for 219 rushing yards and three touchdowns and controlled the clock for a majority of the game, winning the time of possession battle 32:51 to 27:09. Texas A&M-Kingsville would find success through the air, with Turner finishing the game with 297 passing yards and four touchdowns.
The Javelinas had their chances in the second half, as after they fell down 34-20, Turner would connect with
Christian Kretz for his third touchdown of the game. That touchdown ties the single-game record for Texas A&M-Kingsville football, last happening in 2017 with Jordan Thomas going for three scores against Eastern New Mexico.
Down just one score late in the fourth quarter, the Javelinas would get a drive going to milk the clock and leave the Wolves with no time left to score. Turner was not able to connect on a critical fourth down, as the Hogs turned it over on downs. The Javelinas had one last gasp with just one minute left, but were unable to convert as time expired in Kingsville.
Homecoming action in Kingsville got off to a great start, as the Javelinas got up on the scoreboard early with a 38-yard TD pass from Turner to Kretz. Western Oregon responded however, as they would score 13 straight points to go up six at the end of the first quarter.
Western Oregon's kicking game was a key reason as to why the Javelinas were able to get a halftime lead, as the Wolves would miss four kicks (two extra points, two field goals) to keep the Javelinas afloat in the first half. Turner would then rocket one over the Kretz for a 41-yard touchdown to take a 14-13 lead before retaking the lead with Turner's touchdown to Holmes.
