SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program wrapped up the second day of competition at the ITA South Central Regional on Friday with junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) picking up a pair of wins in the consolation bracket.
The 10th-seeded Donkor defeated Kajsa Gedlitschka from Western New Mexico in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2, to face St. Mary's Alice Thane in the quarterfinal round. Thane bested another Javelina in newcomer Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy) as Turolo fell in consecutive sets, 6-3 and 6-1, but the buzzsaw that was Donkor ensured Thane would advance no further.
Donkor powered her way to the straight-set win over Thane, 6-1 and 6-4, to reach the semifinal round. She faces Emilija Visic from Midwestern State on the final day of competition, with the winner advancing to play the victor of Teodora Vrucan from UT Permian Basin and Alexandra Vishnevskaya from host Angelo State.
Another Javelina who picked up multiple wins was sophomore Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany), who earned the second seed in her playoff bracket. She defeated MSU's Kanaha Furutani in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4, and cruised past Brooke Runyan from UTPB.
Over in the first bracket, the sophomore duo of Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) had an opportunity to reach the final rounds.
Maier fell in straight sets to eighth-seeded Brooklyn Ross from UT Tyler, 6-0 and 7-5, while ter Morsche suffered a similar fate at the hands of MSU's Hannah Yip who handed down a straight-set loss at 6-1 and 6-0.
Other Javelinas in the consolation bracket included the sophomore tandem of Noemi Sante (Düsseldorf, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India).
Sante fought 11th-seeded Julia Tozzi from WNMU to three sets as Sante took the first set at 7-5. Sante ran the second set to the tiebreaker point as Tozzi came out on top, 7-6 (5), and only a 10-8 decision in the third set in favor of the Mustang halted Sante's advance in the bracket.
Zaffar, meanwhile, faced Midwestern State's Kyndall Quiroz in the first match as Quiroz passed down a consecutive-set loss to Zaffar at 6-4 and 6-0.
Zaffar was tandem to Maier in the doubles bracket as the two faced UT Tyler's Chloe Dix and Gaini Ibrasheva in their first matchup. The Patriot pairing endured a furious Javelina rally and Zaffar and Maier forced a super-tiebreaker point with Dix and Ibrasheva claiming the victory at 9-8 (4).
The consolation doubles bracket featured Turolo and ter Morsche taking on the MSU duo of Visic and Sydney Williams as the Mustangs held out for the win at 8-3.
The final day of the regional gets underway early in the morning at the ASU Tennis Courts.
