Knaab drops hard-fought, three-set decision in championship match of her bracket

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program wrapped up the second day of competition at the Javelina Quad on Saturday at the Javelina tennis courts.

Sophomore Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) took on Elena Munoz from St. Mary's in the championship round of her bracket. The Rattler claimed the first set at 6-3 before the Javelina rebounded in the second at 6-3.

Munoz won out in the decisive set at 11-9 to clinch the matchup.

Fellow second-year Javelina Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) faced another Rattler in Gabi Ioannou in match that also saw a third set. Ioannou took set one at 6-3 before Maier responded with a 6-3 decision in the second set.

The final set went in favor of Ioannou at 10-5.

Newcomer Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy) squared off with Salma Sanchez from Prairie View A&M as the Panther came away with a straight-set decision at 7-5 and 6-4.

Sophomore Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) took down Alejandra Landaluce from Incarnate Word in a hard-fought three-set match. Zaffar took the first set at 6-2 before Landaluce forced a decisive set with a 6-4 final in the second set.

Zaffar took the final set at 11-9 to claim her victory.

Maier and Zaffar teamed up in the doubles bracket and faced the UTRGV pairing of Sandra Putz and Valeria Montero and posted a 7-6 (2) win in the matchup. The duo then faced Jada Hill and Gabrielle Leslie from PVAMU as the Panther pairing secured a 6-3 decision.

Hill and Leslie moved past Sante and Donkor earlier in the bracket at 6-4, but the Javelina tandem bested Montero and Putz with a decisive 6-0 win in the last matchup. Sante took on Alicia Thal from UTRGV in singles play and came away with a straight-set win at 6-2 and 6-4. Donkor took on Thal's teammate, Ana Platisa, and added another hard-fought, straight-set victory at 7-5 and 6-2.

Knaab and Landaluce, her impromptu teammate, fell 6-2 to Angela Vargas and Maria Garcia from StMU, and were downed by Platisa and Thal in the final round at 6-4.

Turolo and sophomore Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) faced Annette Lira and Ruju Chauhan in doubles play and came away with a hard-fought 7-5 decision. The Javelina pair then saw Salma Sanchez and Claudia Media from PVAMU but ultimately fell 6-3 to the Panther pair.

Ter Morsche also faced Alice Thane in singles play and dropped a three-set look as Thane claimed the first set, 6-0, before ter Morsche battled back for a 7-5 final in the second set, but Thane took the super-tiebreaker at 11-9.

The Javelinas' next stop is the ITA South Central Regional that will take place in San Angelo, Texas, beginning Thursday, September 23, and will wrap up later that week on September 25.
