CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The final day of the Contender CrossFit Islander Open came to an abrupt end on Sunday as weather forced a stoppage of competition for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program.
Sophomore
Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) took on Saki Oyama from North Texas in the championship match of her bracket. Oyama took the first set at 6-2 as ter Morsche was locked in a battle in the second set, trailing 3-2, before weather ended the bout.
Classmate
Noemi Sante (Düsseldorf, Germany) faced Abigail Wild from Tyler Junior College in her final match and took the first set at 6-2. Wild forced a tiebreaker in the second set with a 7-6 (7-5) decision but the Javelina came out on top in the matchup with a 10-7 final in the super-tiebreaker.
Junior
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) took on Jasmin Starr from UTSA in her final matchup as the Roadrunner handed her a straight-set defeat at 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore
Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany), classmate
Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) and newcomer
Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy) were all scheduled to compete on the final day before their respective opponents bowed out of the bracket.
The Javelinas return home this week as they host the Javelina Quad beginning September 17 at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
