Ter Morsche advances to Championship Round at Islander Open

Sophomore from Netherlands picks up another Division-I win to reach final match of F Singles Draw

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Day two of the Contender CrossFit Islander Open is in the books for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program on a day that saw sophomore Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) advance to the Championship Round of the F Singles Draw.

Ter Mrosche faced Jordan Ortega-Mendez from host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and downed the Islander in three sets. Ter Morsche grabbed the first set at 7-6 (7-5) before Ortega-Mendez came back in the second set at 6-3.

The final set went in favor of the Javelina as ter Morsche won out at 10-6. She faces Saki Oyama from North Texas in the championship match on Sunday at the HEB Tennis Center.

Junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and sophomore Noemi Sante (Düsseldorf, Germany) squared off with Sahithi Vutukuru and Lusine Chobanyan from Sam Houston State as the Javelina pair came away with the win at 6-3. Their final opponent of the bracket was the UTRGV tandem of Isabelle Bahr and Marjorie Souza as the Vaquero duo took the match at 7-6 (7-5).

Sante's day in the C Singles Draw saw her take a hard-fought, three-set loss to Camille Townsend from TAMUCCat 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 as she took the second set before the super-tiebreaker went to the Islander. Her final opponent will be Abigail Wild from Tyler Junior College.

Donkor, meanwhile, faced UTT's Leony Deutschmann and dropped another hard-fought decision at 6-4, 7-6 (6-4). She will face Jasmin Starr from UTSA on the final day of competition.

Newcomer Manuela Turolo (Cividale del Friuli, Italy) saw her first collegiate action with a matchup in the H Singles Draw against another Vaquero in Alicia Thal as her foe took the straight-set win at 6-4, 6-1. Turolo will play in the third-place match on Sunday against UT Tyler's Chloe Dix.

Ter Morsche and classmate Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) faced Gaini Ibrasheva and Tanvikhaa Saravanan from UTT and the Patriot pair came away with a 6-1 decision to wrap their portion of doubles play.

Sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) advanced past SHSU's Emma Stauber in the D Singles Bracket and will face Mia Milojevic from Tyler JC on the final day of competition.

The final day of competition at the HEB Tennis Center begins at 9 a.m. CT.
