Ter Morsche picks up a win on day one of Islander Open

Sophomore from Netherlands downs Division I foe in opening round of play

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Sophomore Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) paced the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program on the first day of the Contender CrossFit Islander Open at the HEB Tennis Center.

Ter Morsche took on UTRGV's Ana Platisa in the F Singles Draw and came away with a straight-set victory at 6-2 and 6-2. Her second-day opponent will be Jordan Ortega-Mendez from host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) faced off with Jasmine Adams from North Texas and fell by a count of 6-1, 6-1. Her second round will be UT Tyler's Leony Deutschmann.

Sophomore Noemi Sante (Düsseldorf, Germany) dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Isidor Zivkovic from Sam Houston State and will see another Islander in the form of Camille Townsend on the second day.

Classmate Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) forced a tiebreaker in her first set against UNT's Kexuan Zhou but ended up on the backend of a 7-5 score before the Mean Green took the second set at 6-3.  SHSU's Emma Stauber will be the day two opponent for Maier.

Sophomore Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) fell in consecutive sets to her Division I foe in Leopoldine Boisseau from TAMUCC, 6-0 and 6-1, as her second round opponent will be Emmeline Polevoi from Lamar. Fellow second-year Javelina Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) faced off with Likhitha Kalava from North Texas and dropped the first set at 6-1 before forcing a super-tiebreaker in the second set en route to a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2) loss to wrap up the first round of singles play.

Knaab will face the Tyler JC's Hrudaya Shah on the second day of the bracket.

The doubles portion of competition saw Donkor and Sante take a 8-3 loss to Adams and Lucie Devier from UNT. Their second round opponent will be SHSU's Sahithi Vutukuru and Lusine Chobanyan.

Maier and Zaffar squared off with the Mean Green tandem of Zhou and Sophia Hummel and eventually fell 8-4. They'll see Mia Milojevic and Yeva Kononovych from TJC on day two.

Ter Morsche paired up with Knaab in doubles play and turned in a hard-fought loss to Platisa and Alicia Thal from UTRGV at 8-6. The duo of Gaini Ibrasheva and Tanvikhaa Saravanan from UT Tyler will be the second day opponents for the Javelina pair.

The second day of competition at the HEB Tennis Center begins at 9 a.m. CT.
