Javelinas close out regular season on the road against Western New Mexico and UT Tyler

First match slated for April 22 in Silver City, N.M.

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program closes out the regular season this week on the road with a pair of Lone Star Conference matches against Western New Mexico and UT Tyler.

The first match will take place in Silver City, N.M., against the Mustangs on April 22 at 11 a.m. MT (12 p.m. CT), while the season finale is slated for April 24 at 12 p.m. CT in Tyler, Texas.

The Javelinas extended their unbeaten streak to four matches after sweeping the last weekend of play at home. TAMUK defeated UAFS by a perfect 7-0 score at the Javelina Tennis Courts before a 4-3 hard-fought win over Cameron took place at the HEB Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, following a site switch due to inclement weather.

The matchup against the Lions started with a clean sheet in doubles play as freshmen Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) and Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) sparked the run with a 6-2 win over Bianca Koen and Milena Achlamov.

Singles play against UAFS featured four matches decided in straight sets with Maier leading the way in the third flight with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Chloe Ruppanner. She was followed by sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) in the top flight with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Koen and freshman Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) who turned in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Camila Romera in the fifth pairing.

Zaffar was the last to finish her matchup in consecutive sets with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Petra Csizmadia that included a 10-8 win in the super-tiebreaker of the second set.

The match against the Aggies sang a different tune as Maier and Zaffar, along with Donkor and junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia), secured the doubles point for the Blue and Gold.

Both sides were evened through five of the singles matches, which put ter Morsche and Julianne Garcia center stage in the fifth pairing. The Javelina clinched the first set at 7-6 by virtue of a 7-5 tiebreaker win and came away with the decision in the second set at 7-5.

The wins over UAFS and CU pushed the Javelinas' record to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in league matches. Leading the way in singles play is ter Morsche who picked up her eighth win of the dual season as all eight wins have come at the fifth flight. Right behind her is Montalvo with seven wins, five of which have come in the third pairing, along with Zaffar who has seven wins, all in the fourth matchup.

Doubles play features Donkor and Montalvo both with seven wins at the top flight, while Maier and Zaffar have picked up five in the second tandem. The third duo features ter Morsche teamed up with freshman Jana Knaab (Stuttgart, Germany) as the two have added four wins in the dual season.

The matchup with WNMU was rescheduled from earlier in the year as the Mustangs are 5-13 overall and 1-5 in LSC matches in 2021. They have won their last two matches against Schreiner and Texas Lutheran but dropped 13 of their previous 14 matches with the lone win coming against UT Permian Basin on April 10.

UTT sports an 11-4 overall mark, 4-2 in its first full LSC season, despite falling to No. 17 Midwestern State on April 17 at home at 4-3. Before that, the Patriots won four consecutive league matches that started with a 7-0 sweep of UAFS on April 2, followed by a 4-3 win over Cameron on April 3, a 7-0 win over UT Permian Basin on April 8 and a 6-1 win over WNMU on April 10.
